Forster Tournament Trip June 2014

The June Long Weekend Forster Tuncurry Tournament trip started with a rainy but very fun bus trip up the coast. It’s always great to see the boys from years 5 to 11 bonding and getting along so well from the get-go, it sets a great vibe for the weekend ahead. Despite the dismal weather forecast the rain cleared just as we arrived into town and the boys were ready for action.

The older boys playing in the Australian point scoring under 18’s division were the first matches set down for the tournament and were scheduled to start at 1pm. The wet and heavy conditions underfoot proved challenging against some big serving opponents and a very strong and experienced field. Nick, Sam & Jerome all fought hard against some of the division’s top seeds gaining valuable match experience and would compete in the plate draw the following day. The remainder of the group spent the afternoon settling in and preparing for their matches which would commence the following day.

Saturday morning the sun is shining, we’ve had a great first night and we’re getting things rolling with the 16 and under Round Robin competition. Round Robins are always a great opportunity for players to get a lot of matches under their belt and to learn how to adapt their game against a wide range of playing styles. The 16’s Round Robin saw some of our 9 year old players stepping up to take on some of our 16’s. This was all in the name of experience and I think the most valuable lesson the younger boys learnt was that they could reduce some of their errors simply by not overplaying and forcing their shots. Some fantastic matches were played and all the boys learnt the importance of working hard and fighting for every point. Jack Griffiths and Kieran Richards won through to the play offs along with Sam Stalley who was the eventual winner in the final. Well done Sam and to all the boys, you did yourselves proud.

The 12 & Under Round Robin was played across the Saturday & Sunday and was also a fantastic event. Xavier Masztak, Nathaniel Graves, Daniel Bridger and Chris Spanner all fought hard and played some great matches. Xavier Branagan finished top of his group taking him through to the semi-final playoff.

Kieran and Jerome both played some impressive tennis to win through to the semi-finals of the C Grade Men’s singles, they then had to back up and play against each other in the doubles with Chris and Jerome winning through to make the finals. Nick Spanner lost a very tight up and down tiebreaker in the B Men’s singles and then joined forces with Sam Stalley to make it through to the finals of the B Men’s Doubles.

I teamed up with Ben O’Neil, an old boarding master from Riverview who loves his tennis, and lost the final match not before tearing my groin retrieving a lob.

The trip was a fantastic experience for the boys, they learnt a lot from all the tournament match experience and as usual had a renewed enthusiasm for the game when they returned. Congratulations to everyone involved.

We look forward to our next tournament trip away which will be Port Macquarie over the October long weekend!
